When I was introduced to St Rose I was amazed to see a perfume label so deeply rooted in sustainability. It comes as no surprise Belinda’s considered approach comes from years working in the luxury cosmetics industry in New York. Rigorously selecting each ingredient culminating in the perfect composition of 6 perfumes.
Months into our partnership, I have completely updated my perfume collection to St Rose and almost exclusively wear Circa 91 and Vigilante.
I love Circa 91 for its evocation of European summers. The androgynous scent has a fresh feel with top notes of bergamot and lemon uplifted by a heart of patchouli, iris and jasmine.
My evening scent Vigilante is darker and more sensual. With a fresh top notes of bergamot and Cypress, it is complemented with upcycled rose concentrate, Ylang Ylang and jasmine.
We chatted to Belinda herself about sustainability, giving back & the future of St Rose.
BS: I truly believe you cannot rush art and fragrance is inherently a slow artform. The journey of our natural parfums begins with a seed. From field to the bottle, each botanical essence on our perfumer’s palette is then carefully selected and blended to achieve a harmonious composition. Finding the perfect balance of these individual aromatic notes can take months, even years.
Working in harmony with nature has always been paramount to me, that intention is what inspired our name – for the Patron Saint of Gardeners. We are guided by that ethos in being mindful about both how we create and in what we choose to put out into the world …
BS: From day one transparency and traceability have been pillars of our brand. We prioritize working with ingredients that are sourced directly from cooperatives and farmers at origin. Sourcing at origin not only ensures that we support farms and their communities that cultivate in a way that aligns with our values, but it also secures the supply chain and the quality of these natural ingredients.
BS: Sandalwood, not only is it an incredible aromatic material to work with but it also has beautiful ancient spiritual meaning. In fact, we currently have six distinct scents from fresh aromatics to sensuous woods in our collection and they share a common note which is our signature sandalwood that we proudly source from a sustainable Western Australian farm that is 50% indigenous owned. Choosing to anchor our collection with this gorgeous natural ingredient was a mindful decision at the beginning of our brand’s journey after meeting our friends at our sandalwood farm and discovering the incredible rich history of this aromatic note - burning the wood in sacred rituals, the smoke is believed to calm and protect mind, body, and soul.
We’ve distilled the ancient wisdom of sandalwood’s transcendent and protective properties as a signature note as a simple way to not only support this incredible community but to also ground the beautiful philosophy of connection with self, soul and nature into one’s daily ritual.
For every ST. ROSE purchase we proudly donate to the farm’s local community through the K. Farmer Dutjahn Foudation. Our hope to use our platform to share the inspiring history of our friends at Kutkabubba and the significant environmental impact their cultural and ecological knowledge is having on climate change.
BS: I love travel and have been really lucky to have had the opportunity to explore the world since I was a small child. I have a big appreciation for culture and especially the local foods and historic arts tied to a specific place. Travel always reinvigorates me. I could simply be a voyeur walking around a new place with eyes wide open to have my creative cup filled for months. While experiencing new geographies and discovering the sights, sounds and smells unique to a locale is the greatest inspiration, nature is absolutely my biggest muse. The smell of the air just before a rainstorm, the earthy greenness of a forest, sweet florals of a garden …I don’t know if you could be in this industry without a grand love affair with nature.
BS: Truly I love and wear them all but Desert Nomad is a favourite child in the collection because of how it was inspired and the intention behind it. Named in honour and with permission of our friends at our sandalwood farm, the Martu Indigenous community, whose ancestors are the last known nomadic people living in the vast central desert of Australia.
I am also layering Desert Nomad and Grand Larceny at the moment which is pretty dreamy.
BS: Listening to music, long walks outside, yoga, an ocean swim, or being in the garden.
I’ve also started putting into practice a concept learned from reading “The Artist’s Way” which is to have creative dates to reinspire, or often in my case a way to release some pent-up energy. Visiting a gallery, taking a painting class or a nature walk with an old film camera.
Becoming a mum earlier this year. It has completely rocked my world in the most beautiful way. Career-wise, being nominated for The Fragrance Foundation’s Indie Fragrance of the Year Award, the industry’s top honour for olfactive works of art. To sit beside such iconic names as such a young brand was definitely a pinch-me moment.
BS: More transparency, I’d love to see other brands also share their ingredients more openly with the spirit of sustainability in mind. I am also excited to see more innovations around packaging, single use sampling in particular.
BS: We have some really exciting projects underway and I cannot wait to share them. There will be new scents and even within entirely new categories continuing to build our brand within the intersection of beauty and wellness … for both people and planet.
]]>With this new release, we made the conscious choice to honour the notion of small batch and limited edition, over continuity of the towel series. Taking the opportunity to evolve the concept into a new iteration of lifestyle essentials that will no doubt be seen on beaches all throughout summer.

Using natural fibres ensures both comfort for the wearer's skin and reduces the devastating impact of synthetic microfibers when laundering. Our brands consider their choice of fabrics with both environmental kindness and luxurious handfeel and texture in mind.
Silk can be mixed with other natural fibres to achieve a more structured or sheer finish. Palma Martin uses a premium blend of linen and silk for voluminous detailing and tailored pleats. Van Der Kooij’s beautifully lustrous silk dupion is lightly slubbed – a technique that requires less processing. Autark’s light blend of cotton, silk and hemp is a durable and soft mix – making your item extremely wearable and long lasting.
While silk is a renewable resource and biodegradable at the end of its lifecycle, we recognise that silk isn’t perfect. When done well, silk manufacturing can be a harmonious and low waste process. It is also possible to find ethical alternatives to the silk-making process.
Where possible our brands research and utilise the highest form of sustainable fabrics to ensure the fabrics they use aren’t harmful to the earth, or to those handling the fabrics along the production line. At its core, fashion will never be perfectly sustainable. But our brands honour their imperfections and are working towards a better, cleaner future.
Which silk pieces will become your everyday or event staples?
]]>Layer different chain lengths and styles together for a bold touch to any simple outfit. A white tee and jeans can instantly be elevated with Flash Jewellery's Eight Chain Necklace layered over a finer, minimal chain like the Lowe Box Chain or Vero Chain. Our style inspo is Jess Scott Hayes (@scottyjhayes) seen layering the Leisure Chain Necklace with the Vermouth Chain Necklace.
Make a statement and let your jewellery do the talking by pairing a chunky chain with a minimal outfit. Wear the Flash Jewellery Leisure Chain Necklace or Eight Chain Necklace on its own for outfit impact.
Pair matching necklace and bracelet sets together for a coordinated finish. Try Flash Jewellery's Leisure Chain Necklace and Bracelet or Vermouth Chain Necklace and Bracelet for an effortlessly chic look. Wear your chain bracelets over the sleeve of a blouse for a chic finish like stylist Jaime Dillon Ridge (@jamieridge).
Create a drop style necklace with your chains by clasping high in front and leaving the necklace to drop down your décolletage. It's the perfect accompaniment to a deep v-neck.
Alternatively, wear it short as a choker and have the links drop down your back. This style is perfect for layering with more chains or complementing a higher neckline or low back.
Our favourite for achieving this style is the Flash Jewellery Vermouth Chain Necklace.

Cotton is the mainstay fabric of our wardrobe. Soft and breathable, it is a year round, versatile staple. At Public Figure we love supporting brands that work to reduce their impact on the environment by choosing to use organic cotton.
Natural fabrics are a common preference for many, the benefits such as breathability, tactility and movement are hard to trump with engineered fibres. However, natural materials – cotton in particular – have come under scrutiny in the sustainability debate due to the large volume of water it takes to produce and the harmful effect potent pesticides have on the local environment.
As a conscious consumer, seeking out Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified organic materials is the way to go. Purchasing an organic cotton garment comes with multiple benefits - it demands far less water to grow and the methods used to cultivate the cotton crops give back to the earth through biologically diverse agriculture, preventing the need for pesticides.
Public Figure is your one-stop-shop for organic styles to take you into Winter. Shop organic cotton staples, loungewear and knitwear from our selection of sustainable and ethical brands.

Known as Silver Gilt or Gilded silver, Vermeil is the next best thing to solid gold. If you're looking for investment jewelry this is it. Vermeil jewellery has a sturdy sterling silver base heavily coated in gold plating - usually 14K gold. The combination of precious metal gives this material a unique durability. Unlike solid gold, sterling silver won’t dent or warp as easily - making it the perfect choice for everyday jewellery and rings.
One of the key questions we get asked about our beautiful vermeil pieces is will the plating wear off. Unfortunately the answer is yes. But the good news is that vermeil pieces can easily be re-plated at most jewelers.
When shopping for sustainable jewellery there are a few key points to look out for. Firstly high quality jewellery made from materials like vermeil will ensure the longevity of the piece. Secondly the use of recycled materials and small batch handmade production assists in minimising industry waste. And finally be on the lookout for certifications from bodies such as the Responsible Jewellery Council that ensures policies and processes are regulated to high ethical and sustainable standards.
Which vermeil pieces will become your everyday accessories?

At Public Figure we love to support locally made apparel and accessories. We strive to educate our community on the importance of mindfully investing and consciously consuming. Making considered local purchases can have a positive social, economic and environmental impact.
]]>At Public Figure we love to support locally made apparel and accessories. We strive to educate our community on the importance of mindfully investing and consciously consuming. Making considered local purchases can have a positive social, economic and environmental impact.
Manufacturing in Australia and New Zealand supports local suppliers, pattern makers, machinists and manufacturers. Our selection of brands at Public Figure work to uplift our local industries and use local resources sustainably while maintaining impeccable quality.
Locally made clothes require less distance to travel, therefore reducing the carbon emissions produced during transportation from designer, to Public Figure, to you. By making a purchase at Public Figure you're contributing to bettering the world around us - love that for you!
By shopping locally, you are directly contributing to your local community. Your money is going straight into your community and in turn helping it thrive economically. At Public Figure we stock other local designers to support the local economic cycle.
Shopping local means nurturing homegrown businesses that use local resources sustainably and employ local workers in safe and healthy conditions for a fair living wage. It means uplifting local artisans and manufactures to ensure quality, skill preservation and self-sufficient production away from depending on imports.
Shopping locally encourages a slower, more considered approach to consumption, by altering your purchasing decisions to reflect not only price and quality but the social and environmental impact of products. In a movement away from mindless consumption, shopping locally helps consumers eliminate impulse buys and opt for local brands and products that create a positive impact.
By shopping locally, you are helping the local economy by creating more jobs. The more we support small businesses, the more jobs will be created and the better off our local communities will be.
We selectively support labels that not only create quality products but also invest in social and environmental issues. It is important to us that our brands are mindful of their impact on the world and make an effort to give back to the environmental or local communities. By shopping locally, your purchase will most likely support a local not-for-profit or charity relevant to that area.
Shopping locally enables a personal approach to buying. At Public Figure, we pride ourselves on our close relationships with our local brands. We love to share our deep understanding of our brands values and behind-the-scenes stories with our PF community. The personal touch you receive from local businesses cannot be matched by a large chain.
A marketplace of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and diversity in the local economy. Local businesses are also usually hubs of creativity and innovation; the very fact they exist is down to the idea from an individual or multiple people. Our local designers at Public Figure are constantly innovating in the space of sustainable fashion and we love to support their efforts towards a better future and more mindful industry.
Local designers and brands bring some much-needed originality in an oversaturated market of fast fashion. Shopping locally promotes individuality and refreshes communities that are dominated by generic and commercialised companies. With many local designers producing small, exclusive runs you are more likely to be purchasing a limited or one-of-a-kind piece.
Your values and desires are much more influential to a local business or designer. By voting with your wallet, your purchasing choices exert influence on what styles are produced and reordered or even to the extent of what internal business changes are made.
Make it your 2021 goal to support more local brands. Encourage the growth and sustainability of your local community!
My goals for Del Rainbow all surround the notion of creating. Creating such strong foundations and intentions entering the year, so our team can flourish throughout 2021. Creating five key events for Del Rainbow Store to bring together our community. Creating more growth within our virtual platform and taking this to the next level. Creating key opportunities worldwide and what that looks like in 2021, providing something to look forward to every quarter for our brands and team. It seems as though 2020 was such a hard and fast roller-coaster ride, we now have some time to slow down before the new year and recalibrate right before the next ride, we now know the dips and turns and can really see the joy within this. We have strong goals to continue the growth within the business and will be looking to make Del Rainbow a full servicing sphere with a few extra developments in the works. A key goal is to build in team spiritual growth workshops, so we can deliver our best selves throughout the next year and continue to grow together strongly.
My most important resolution is to show kindness to myself - to try to treat myself as I would my best friend. I’d like to be patient with myself, to spend time with myself, to encourage curiosity and to forgive myself. I’d like to show myself a little more love and attention in the form of self care, and to be mindful and in the moment. And I want to extend that sentiment my work for Autark, and to my nearest and dearest too. And finally, to eat more cake.
keep - care - treasure
At PALMA MARTÎN we want to continue to inspire people to buy what they love, something they will want to keep and hold onto. By offering uniquely playful pieces, in high quality natural fabrics we aim to bring the joy of dressing back for 2021.
We have big goals for Harris Tapper in 2021 but at the core we are about championing female independence, designing for women with a strong sense of self, who live multi-faceted lives. We want to continue to stay true to this as we grow our business and expand into other parts of the world. We have evolved a lot from a design point of view and this evolution feels more authentic to us. We want to collaborate more with individuals and business that aligns with our core values. Both personally and professionally we have learnt how to be resilient and we intend to carry this on through into next year.
In the New Year I'd really love to travel more, and get out of Sydney to shoot beautiful campaign imagery. Travelling for work has always been on my to do list, so hopefully 2021 will be the year for that! So many incredible things have already happened since becoming a freelance photographer, and I am really thankful for the people I have met, and the relationships I've built. I'd also hope that's something I am able to continue to do throughout the New Year, so I am really excited to see what happens next!
We will become more inclusive in our sizes offering. We want women of various sizes to find their favourite Ziah piece and feel comfortable wearing it. We are really proud to be working with biodegradable fabrications and we are excited to increase our offering. We are looking into partnering with an organisation that offsets our Carbon emissions. Also, we will continue to do our best to create authentic and timeless designs for our beloved customers.
After the year we've all had, it's good to be able to create positive plans and directions for the coming year. On a larger scale, our hopes are for the world to overcome this pandemic that has affected every single person in some way shape or form. I hope that we can all continue moving forward and start to come out of this altered reality, whilst learning from this experience and growing from it. On a micro level, our resolution is to stop and really appreciate the small wins - as an emerging designer that wears many hats, it’s easy to brush past some of the incredible achievements. There is always something that needs to get done or a little hiccup that needs resolving, however, by not appreciating the wins and really absorbing them it can skew your perception of how far you have come, which can undervalue all the hard work and effort it has taken to get there. So, 2021 will be about slowing down a little to stop and acknowledge all the wins, big and small.
And a little something from our very own Public Figure Founder & Director...
Each December I look back on the year that been and start to plan for the year to come. This year is extra special. Public Figure has come such a long way in the last 365 days. Like most small businesses we have overcome all the hurdles 2020 brought us. Public Figure is now 1 year old, for the next year we wanting to grow our exclusive product lines further (watch this space for our next zodiac collaboration) and host Pop Up Shops in Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane. We are also working on becoming a certified B Corporation and taking our sustainable commitments to the next level.
Personally, I’d love to work on work life balance and learn to log off each night. After a year dedicating my time to launching and growing Public Figure, I would also like to dedicate time to volunteer again.

What is the inspiration behind your latest Idaho collection?
The inspiration behind our Idaho collection was born when we discovered an incredibly rare, beautiful stone which we hoped would become the focal point of the collection. The stone is mined exclusively in Idaho, in the mid-west of the USA, and has an incredible appearance which literally reflects the landscape from which it is derived. This led us on a journey throughout the incredible wilderness of the mid-western USA and formed the foundations for the collection. Ironically, the stone never made it to us in time due to all of the international turmoil this year, but the valleys, peaks, wildflowers and lakes which shape this particular landscape are reflected throughout the forms and stories of the collection.
What sparked your passion for sustainable jewellery?
When I entered into the jewellery industry, I came to learn that there are no set standards in place regarding sourcing, reporting or traceability of materials. I discovered that it is the responsibility of the jeweller to ask the right questions and ensure that they are sourcing and acting responsibly.
The jewellery industry has had a reputation for being slow in finding its ecological conscience, and I believe there is a lack of transparency which comes down to an insufficient understanding of the supply chain, or a lack of willingness from those leading the industry to truly look at these often complex pathways. Traditionally, precious metals and gemstones have been mined out of the poorest regions on earth and pass-through multiple hands on their way to market, most without any traceability. I believe we, as jewellers, have a responsibility to understand every element of where our materials are sourced, how they are obtained, and the ethicality involved in each step of the process.
How important is sourcing sustainable materials to your conscious jewellery practice?
Understanding of supply chain is a vital component of acting consciously in the jewellery industry. Over the last few years, we have invested time and resources in assessing our entire supply chain thoroughly, equipping ourselves with the right expertise to ensure we can continue to improve our practises and tread as lightly as possible. This has been a great challenge, but throughout this process we have forged strong and trusting relationships with our suppliers, which are paramount to our continuing growth and development as a responsible jewellery company.
We are a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council and we are currently working through the process to become accredited. The RJC is a standards setting initiative that ensures sustainable and ethical practices are met from mine to retail. Supply chains are often complex, multi-tiered and interconnected, and with RJC’s guidance our focus has expanded far beyond our in-house practices, which we have had a great grasp on for many years - to tracing material throughout every single step of the supply chain.
What is the biggest challenge in creating hand-crafted sustainable jewellery?
When it comes to manufacturing, the more conscious choice is often the more costly, it also takes a great deal of commitment, time and resources to truly stand behind the claim of being a responsible jewellery company. We work with a large proportion of Australian sourced materials, pay for Australian labour and choose to work with small scale, independent local suppliers. These choices all come at a cost, but the value is reflected clearly in a product which is not only of superior quality, but comes imbedded with the confidence that it has been strictly crafted consciously.
One of the biggest challenges we have faced as we’ve grown has been scaling our production to meet an increase in demand, while staying true to our core ethos and values. Each of our pieces is made to order in our Sydney studio, by our small team of jewellers. Ultimately this means our clients are almost always having to wait for their pieces to be crafted for them, which, in a world of immediate gratification, can feel quite foreign. This is why we invest so much energy in sharing our processes and educating our clients in the story of their piece, so they can feel as invested in the process as they are in the finished piece.
What are your most worn jewellery pieces?
My wedding stack is my most permanent fixture, with a recently added eternity band gifted to me from our beautiful team to celebrate the recent arrival of our second daughter, Ottilie. I also wear an Art Deco sapphire and diamond plaque ring on my pinky as well as a chunkier stack on my right hand which features a Queenie diamond band, a new Dali ring from our Yves collection, a Ruby promise ring and a couple of fine stacking rings. None of my rings ever come off, along with my Kalani Studs and a necklace my husband made me (with some help!), which features my daughters fingerprint.
How do you approach accessorising your outfits with jewellery?
Seeing as I never really take off my jewellery, I feel like I approach it the other way around, with my jewellery acting as a constant and my outfits styling in around this. The way I wear my jewellery changes all the time. Nowadays, I like to stack up a handful of chunkier textured rings to create a heavier look, balanced with a feather thin band on the next finger. In the same way, I layer up delicate necklaces alongside heavier vintage pieces. I don’t actually change my jewellery pieces all that much, or expand on my collection, but I change how I wear them daily. I am personally connected to all of the pieces I wear and own - whether it be a piece which was gifted to me, a piece I made for myself or a piece featuring a stone I fell in love with. Jewellery by nature represents so much sentiment and connection, and I am lucky to have built my collection of loved pieces which I can rotate as per my personal style evolution.
What is your top tip for extending the life of your jewellery?
Maintenance and care are really key to extending the life of any jewellery piece, particularly something which is worn every day like an engagement ring. Understanding appropriate wear is vital, especially with fine pieces, and regular maintenance and care will ensure the longevity of materials and stones as well as keep the piece looking its best. We offer all of our bridal clients complimentary annual servicing, where we check, clean and service the piece to get it looking brand new again.
What’s in the future for Natalie Marie Jewellery?
As a brand we are driven by an intention to continuously improve and develop on everything we do. Next year will see a continued focus on our sustainability journey, internal investment to ensure our team are nurtured and energised and therefore able to provide the best possible experience for our clients, and the furthering of our give back initiatives through which we proudly support organisations and charities who are doing important work.
Next year we have three new collections launching, an exciting concept capsule going live in January and the potential for a new flagship retail space. We are so excited for the new energy that comes with a new year, and can’t wait to share what we have been working on behind the scenes.

Not only is mixing and matching an easy way to give your swim wardrobe ultimate versatility, it is also a big money saver. At Public Figure, we sell our bikinis as separates so you can get the best fit and are able to style the pieces to match your existing swimwear. Our swimwear brands Peony Swim and Ziah are classic in design and made to transcend wardrobe categorisation.
Colour blocking is a fail-safe style choice when it comes to mixing and matching separates. The key is to either go for a monochrome look by matching different tones of the same colour or pairing a bold colour with a neutral such as black or white.
A classic black bottom is a swimwear staple - it is the perfect base for mixing and matching various statement bikini tops. However, for an equally chic look, pair a solid top with a patterned bottom. To best achieve the look, pull out a prominent colour within the pattern to help you choose your solid colour separate.
To achieve the illusion that your bikini was purchased as a set, make sure the top and bottom are similar in coverage or style. Go for a full coverage top such as a balconette or bandeau paired with a high-waisted pant. A triangle string top with a skimpy coverage string-tie bottom will work seamlessly together. Matching with similar fabrics is another fail-safe way to make separates look cohesive - pairing a crocheted top with a shirred bottom is bound to look mismatched.
Swimwear can be worn as daywear to broaden the versatility and functionality of your wardrobe. Whether you're heading to an event by the beach or a night out, bikinis and one pieces can work effortlessly as bralettes or bodysuits.
For a beach to brunch look, thrown on an oversized shirt and denim bottoms for a casual beachy aesthetic. Our Kowtow Oversized Shirt and Nash Button Up by Lacausa are effortless options.
When it comes to wearing bikinis as regular tops, there are three key styling tricks. First, layer under other pieces such as a blazer, a cropped tee or a sheer blouse. Unless you'll be by the beach, it will most likely be more appropriate to wear the bikini as a base layer.
The Macaroon Holiday Balconette by Peony Swim and the Ella Top by Ziah both double as bralettes. They can be styled on their own or under a sheer top. The Petunia Crochet Swing Top gives an effortless beach vibe over any bikini top.
Second, avoid tops that are undeniably swimwear - choose ones that can be easily mistaken for regular crop tops or bralettes. Third, keep your bottoms high-waisted for the most flattering look.
The Philo One Piece by Ziah is the perfect bodysuit alternative - timeless and versatile worn under denim shorts or linen pants for hot summer days.

]]>This collaboration is so close to our hearts - being a labour of love between our founder Bella Zito & her long time friend and artist Anisah Nasir.
We spoke to the duo about their conscious creation a year after Public Figure's launch, as the announce the conclusion of this exclusive collaboration.
BELLA ZITO: Aquarius
ANISAH NASIR: Pisces
BZ: We met through mutual friends at 18 and immediately clicked. Even after I moved to Sydney we stayed close and ever since she’s been the little sister I’ve never had.
BZ: I knew I wanted to create something exclusive for Public Figure that showed our customer who we are. I immediately thought of collaborating with Anisah as I knew she’d already be part of my business in some way. Beach towels are not a saturated market and we love horoscopes so it was an easy choice for us.
AN: It was such a personal journey for both of us. The stakes were high. So we chose to meet in one of our favourite towns Byron Bay and focus on them for two weeks to make sure they are something we both love.
BZ: We brought really different skill sets to the project so after those two weeks solidifying the concept we went our separate ways and Anisah perfected the artwork and I worked on finding the perfect fabric. We worked well together because we both had free reign of different areas.
BZ: I wouldn’t say I’m super into art - but I know what I like. A large hand drawn nude of Anisah’s hangs in my kitchen and is the only piece of art I’ve ever bought. I get so many compliments on it for its beautiful detailing. It’s like nothing anyone has seen before. I also wanted to give back to a friend who’s always supported me in everything I do.
AN: It was a simple process of studying the both the strengths and weaknesses of each zodiac sign to understand them individually. For each sign I depicted those traits through shadows and curves on the body to position each woman to reflect their sign.
BZ: All of them of course. But specifically Taurus, Leo & Scorpio. When I look at those towels the traits of those signs shine through so brightly.
AN: Cancer definitely.
BZ: This project has such a soft spot in my heart. But all good things must come to an end. We have decided to focus on new projects in the future. But don’t worry you’ll love our next creation just as much!
BZ: this is a hard one. I feel like every week something new amazing happens that makes me so grateful for everything. The biggest few would be influencers like Devin Brugman and Beck Wadworth reaching out and wanting to support our business, the number of retailers asking us to stock the towels (even though we aren't wholesaling) and our friends who have seen the towels at the beach and immediately rung me to tell me about it. Also every time a customer emails, dms or instagrams the towels brightens my day.
AN: This is so hard! There have been so many! Seeing the towels for the first time was such a surreal experience. We had traveled to Byron Bay for the first Public Figure campaign shoot when we received the final set of samples. When Bella started opening the boxes we were really emotional, finally holding the product of months of hard work. Also seeing them in so many photos of customers and influencers on instagram with their towels - as an artist it’s an amazing feeling to see something you’ve created being loved by people as much as you do. Art is a massive part of who I am so I still ‘pinch me’ moments whenever I see people with them!
BZ: Anisah has just launched a range of handmade ceramics stock at Public Figure. I am so amazed how far she’s come since creating a few pieces to display jewellery in the Public Figure pop up in March. People tried to buy them even though they were just display pieces. She has such raw talent - She can pick up a new craft, and master it in minutes. She has spent the last few months leaning and creating to get Blue figure to where it is today.
We are also working on our next Public Figure collaboration but you’ll have to wait another year for that.
AN: I am dedicating my time to my new ceramics brand Blue Figure. I am so excited to be working with Bella and Public Figure again in a new way.
Self Portrait was designed during New Zealand’s nationwide lockdown, so naturally it was a very different process. We were separated and only able to talk over Zoom or phone which had its challenges because it's a very collaborative process. The collection really flowed from themes of isolation, self-reflection and surveillance. It was such a surreal time for everyone and the expected self-reflecting many people did during the lockdown is echoed in the way the collection is documented by model, photographer and cinematographer Veronica Crockford-Pound. Veronica is woman we admire with an established career and embodies the Harris Tapper woman which we felt was important in order carry the depth of the collection. She was shot whilst simultaneously photographing and filming herself on a Super 8 motion picture camera and 35mm film.
The Wes Shirt. Our foundation is in shirting and we both feel it’s the cornerstone of a modern wardrobe. The Wes Shirt is a mix of satin twill and organza, so it has such a soft structure. It also comes with a waist tie so once it’s cinched in at the waist it looks so feminine and soft.
Overall, a strong sense of self. Modern women's lives are so busy and we are trying to offer pieces that champion her independence and support her decisions.
We are designing considered wardrobes to serve our women’s multi-faceted approach to life. This includes work, but also home, evening, travel, being a parent - the list goes on. We are seeing these women integrate their personal and professional lives so much more. Having a 360 degree approach ensures we support her life fully, not just while she’s at work.
It’s one of the easiest pieces to work into any situation. We both prefer an oversized fit and love to push the cuffs up to our elbows. We both wear a shirt almost everyday with a great pair of pants making it easy to go from work to nearly any occasion without having to run home to change.
A portion of our pieces are made from end-of-line fabrics, meaning they have been discarded by other companies or mills, and would otherwise go into landfill. We also use a portion of natural fibres such as silk and cotton. To be completely transparent, one of the biggest hurdles in sustainable fabrics is minimum order quantities. We’re constantly working to find new suppliers and factories which support sustainable growth at the early stages of a business - we’re just under three years old. We have big goals to find a balance between environmentally friendly practices and sustainable business decisions.
Working over Zoom on lockdown was a challenge as our work is very visual and tactile. We take our hats off to any working parents - it’s near impossible to parent and work simultaneously! With opportunity locally we are feeling a sense of optimism and support after coming out of two lockdowns.
More empathy.
Growth! We have big goals. Stay tuned.

We all have those pieces in our jewellery collection that we wear day in and day out. Whether it’s been a long day at work or a late night out, at some point we’ve all been too lazy or forgetful to take proper care of our beloved everyday pieces. Getting into the routine of taking off your jewellery before hoping into the shower or going to bed is a good habit to keep.
Layering Jewellery
With the rise of layered and stacked jewellery comes the need to consider maintaining the longevity of your pieces. When mixing different metals with fashion jewellery, it is important to be cautious of direct contact as it can cause finer jewellery to rub and wear at a faster rate. If you’re jumping on the layered chains trend, it’s best to choose necklaces of the same materials to extend the life of your jewellery.
Sleeping
It’s recommended to remove chains and statement earrings when sleeping as they are at risk of tangling, stretching and warping. If your rings have a high profile they can get caught or bent during sleep. However, stud earrings and low profile rings such as simple metal bands can be slept in as they aren’t at risk of catching.
Showering, Swimming & Exercising
Wearing solid gold jewellery in the shower will not harm the metal itself, however it can reduce the shine. Hot water can also negatively impact some gemstones. It is best to remove any gold plated jewellery before showering or working out, as water and sweat can eventually cause the gold layer to wear off completely. Solid gold, sterling silver and platinum jewellery are safe to wear while exercising provided there isn’t a risk of catching or pulling.
An organised and safe storage space is important for the upkeep of your jewellery. Stackable jewellery trays are our top tip for organising your collection for safe keeping and ultimate wardrobe functionality. A practical storage solution will reduce the time it takes to select your jewellery in the morning and keep matching sets and pairs of earrings together. Ensure that all chains are individually stored to avoid scratching, tangling and knotting.
In the warmer summer months Flash Jewellery recommends storing your jewellery out and away from the pouch to ensure airflow. Store your pieces in a bowl, or in the box with the lid off to avoid the oxidisation process. Clean gold vermeil items with a soft cloth and never use silver polish or metal cleaners. Sterling silver jewellery is best cleaned with a professional product, follow the manufacturer instructions carefully. Gently wipe pearls with a soft cloth to remove body oils or dirt before storing and keep away from objects that may scratch the surface.
Your Natalie Marie Jewellery pieces can be cleaned with a polishing cloth. You might notice that sterling silver and some 9ct golds can oxidise when unworn for long periods of time and will require polishing to return to their original colours.
Any jewellery with stones requires extra care. Stone pieces can be cleaned using warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush. You can check the tightness of stones by gently tapping the surface of the stone with your fingertip and watching for any movement or listening for any clicking. If you suspect a stone is loose, refrain from wearing it until it can be professionally checked.
Young Frankk’s gold plated pieces are plated in a thicker plating than the industry standard over brass and finished off with a coating for anti-tarnish and extended wear. However, care should be taken when wearing or cleaning your plated jewellery as it can wear off slightly overtime especially with heavy use. To keep your gold plated pieces looking their best, Young Frankk recommend gently cleaning with a damp soft cotton cloth after every wear. Jewellery cleaner and polishing cloths are not recommended to be used on gold plated jewellery.
It’s always best to avoid any contact with lotions, perfumes and hairspray, particularly when wearing plated jewellery. Protecting your jewellery from sharp blows, extreme temperatures, direct sunlight and rough surfaces is also important for maintaining longevity.
Building a capsule jewellery collection enables you to get the most wear out of your wardrobe by honing in your taste, avoiding clutter and simplifying getting ready. Our top tip for a well-functioning capsule jewellery wardrobe is organising and storing it with care so that your beloved pieces are less prone to breaks and tarnishes.
A capsule jewellery collection should contain versatile and timeless pieces that can be worn from morning to night and from work to weekend. From everyday adornments, event jewellery and statement pieces, we’ve got your capsule jewellery needs organised.
A capsule wardrobe essential is a collection of minimalistic accessories that will enhance any look. An everyday outfit can be transformed with the addition of minimal hoops and a gold chain. Our favourite way to elevate a simple tee and jeans is to layer Young Frankk’s Classic Chain and Square Chain. Layering chains is the ultimate way to look put together with minimal effort. Adding a touch of gold or silver to a neutral toned outfit can add a pop of interest to an otherwise basic look.

For a modern twist on the everyday hoop, Young Frankk’s Varro Earrings are our go-to for ultimate comfort with a stud closure. Stacking rings is an effortless styling hack for adding interest to an off-duty look. Young Frankk’s Sawyer Dome Ring is the perfect minimalist ring to add to your stack. An anklet might not be on everyone’s must-have list but the Zadie Chain Anklet by Young Frankk will change your mind; it’s perfect for achieving a relaxed, beachy aesthetic.
A dainty piece of jewellery can transform any black dress to evening standard. Less is more when it comes to event jewellery. For a fail-safe elegant finish, wear a matching jewellery set to achieve a sleek uniform look.
Delicate earrings are an essential in any capsule wardrobe. They can transform a simple evening outfit into a statement. A pair of delicate drop studs such as the Natalie Marie Jewellery’s Calder Studs bring subtle movement and sophistication to an evening outfit. A hoop earring is a must-have for all occasions with its timeless design that can be dressed up or down. Meet our favourite delicate hoop perfect for event dressing; the Bailey Hoop Earring by Young Frankk. For a modern alternative to the classic hoop, the Jamie Earring by Young Frankk is our pick, designed with an understated sculptural finish.Wearing a minimalist necklace for a touch of shine can make all the different to event dressing. Young Frankk's Classic Chain is a versatile piece for your collection. Wear two chains together and clasp at the front for a modern take on a classic 90's style. For something precious and dainty, try Natalie Marie Jewellery’s Agate Necklace to seamlessly take you from desk to dinner.
Jewellery is the perfect accessory for making a statement. Turn heads and get noticed with chunky gold jewellery and unique designs. Statement jewellery can fit seamlessly into a capsule wardrobe if its purpose is to elevate a basic outfit. Oversized earrings and bold adornments are a way to spice up an off-duty look or boost an evening outfit to the next level. Pair layers of gold jewellery with Young Frankk’s Varro Cuff for a daring finish.
Earrings are the easiest gateway into making a statement with your jewellery. Be bold this event season with Young Frankk’s Stanton Earring. Featuring elegant cable-chain links that drop effortlessly from the ear creating a sense of movement. Decorating the décolletage has never been so easy with Young Frankk's Classic Chain. For a sophisticated take on the chain-necklace trend, layer two for a chunky statement finish.
“Everybody Wants This. Everybody Wants To Be Us.” - Miranda Priestly
Yes, lots of people want a piece of the glitz, the glamour, excitement and mesmerising world of fashion. But has all that glitter been hiding something sinister?
The #BlackLivesMatter movement exposed some fundamental flaws in the our beloved fashion industry. An ill-fated attempt to support a noble cause exposed systemic discrimination, negligence and deception. Allegations so profound and laundry so dirty, it felt like the complete demise of the multi-billion-dollar empire as we knew it, accompanied with the revelation that perhaps we had been presumptuous and turned a blind eye to conformist constructs and prejudice attitudes.
“An industry that seems more rotten day by day” - Diet Prada
Ignorance had truly been bliss.
Our morals were tested, with the industry’s credibility now largely in question. We no longer felt it was right to wear that blue sweater selected for us by the people in that room from that pile of stuff. As it turned out, those people were the ones contributing to the cause we were trying to disseminate. Could we be like Andy? Consciously make fashion choices that we naively thought exempted us from this toxic world?
It was time to demand accountability.
#PullUpAustralia started trending and the dominos begun to fall as a conglomerate of our favourite brands were called out for a consistent lack of diversity across their most forward-facing advertising platforms. Fashion giants were exposed for having white-centric company cultures and unreasonable employee standards that were unattainable and blatantly segregated WOC.
What started as a movement about police brutality in America and the continuous mis-treatment of black people had now found its way to infiltrate the “untouchable” and esteemed empire that is the world of fashion. Out for blood, the people demanded immediate and actionable change and a vendetta against popular labels started manifesting. Businesses, now with their backs against the wall, in the most hard-pressed of situations, scrambled to resolve and dismantle any condemnations.
I mean, this stemmed from underrepresentation to representation with mistreatment, with black employees revealing that they’d been overqualified, underpaid and overworked within the walls of the fashion bible itself.
A sorry wasn’t going to suffice.
We saw many using their social platforms to commit to inclusion going forward, some pledging 25% of representation of BIPOC in their posts. As a WOC, I started to receive an influx of interest from brands wanting to collaborate for content.
Personally, the unfounded support for diversity from these brands started to feel tokenistic; a cause that seemed to have only taken precedence because it was trending.
It’s like a box had to be ticked.
Had the root sprouted into a pernicious weed?
Some had been completely silent until that point; racism hadn’t been on their radar. The darker the pigmentation of a model’s skin, the less appealing, desirable or marketable for that matter. Now, in what seemed like the most reactive of motions, these brands had decided colour was the latest “it”, trendy and aesthetic. Others had ounces of pigmented skin sprinkled strategically through their feeds and had now drastically increased this, which made it feel opportunistic as the original posts were much fewer and farther between. I know I wasn’t the only one left wondering, was this proactivity or performative marketing?
Among a myriad of other injustices, popular fashion brands were now under fire for throwing their hats into the performative ally-ship ring along with an obstinate lack of transparency.
While some hailed these broad gestures as progressive in nature, I among many others wasn’t so convinced. Although not blatantly visible to the wandering eye, a number of these brands were still enabling a gross lack of diversity and its effects behind what they thought were thick sound proof walls. We got, “We are working tirelessly behind the scenes.” But were they? The closed-door policy hadn’t put us at ease, it had only heightened our suspicions. Black women were completely absent in favour of the likes of anyone darker than Bondi Sands ultra-dark and there was also still barely any representation at head office, behind the camera or manning the makeup brush. While impressed by Jacquemus’ new L’amour Collection and show which featured a refreshingly diverse casting, I couldn’t help but question the absence of this in the operational team.
There’s a slight silver lining though.
Some action is better than none right? Vogue Australia committed to a better path forward, publishing their values and allocating resources that shed light on the #BlackLivesMatter movement. They cemented their passion towards the cause with their August cover featuring Sudanese Model Adut Akech Bior. More on Australian fashion, Zimmermann’s also somewhat kept their promise with just about 25% of representation in their posts. Bec & Bridge too. Camilla & Marc just came out with the most diverse campaign I’ve seen in a while.
We’re getting somewhere.
But we won’t see monumental changes straight away.
As much as I’d like to be Miranda and impatiently scold Andy (fashion industry) for moving at a glacial pace.
I’m thrilled that there is at least some momentum.
I can only hope that the unwitting disclosure of fashion’s “best kept” secrets has led to a more accountable, inclusive and transparent industry.

The brand has evolved so much over the last 5 years so it’s almost hard to define the inspiration. When I started out in 2015 it had quite an artistic focus, I was doing a lot of my own prints using painting and drawing techniques, which I would then digitise and turn into prints. As the brand evolved I found people were gravitating more towards the basic staples within collections, so I began to focus more on silhouettes and developing timeless styles that were flattering, comfortable and a great fit.
My creative process usually starts with mood boarding and sketching shapes and styles. This usually coincides with fabric sourcing and considering what colours and textures will work together. Once I have a few styles I am set on we usually start mocking them up and bringing them to life to see if the shape is working in terms of fit and proportion. It’s always a lengthy process to get a style perfect, but fit is a priority of mine so we spend a lot of time on this.
We focus on striving to use majority natural fibres, minimising waste and minimising the use of plastic. Being locally made we are able to make small quantities and recut styles if the demand is there, this means we don’t have a lot of excess stock which can often turn into waste. I also like to focus on creating styles that are classic and timeless so they can be worn over and over and aren’t thrown away after one season. Minimising the use of plastic is also a priority; all garments are shipped in biodegradable satchels. This is another plus of being locally made, as our garments don’t arrive individually wrapped in plastic, we pick them all up from our makers in Sydney in reusable garment bags.
I love the flora dress in check. I think its such a fun statement piece but also comfortable and easy to wear. The fabric also comes from a beautiful Italian Mill that prioritises sustainability production throughout their factory.
I have been living in the JB knitwear all winter so I probably couldn’t live without the Stacey jumper in black, I usually layer it over the Spencer dress in green when I’m feeling the COVID kg’s and just want to be comfy!
My personal style is very relaxed and low maintenance. I live in sneakers and pieces that are comfortable; I do wear quite a lot of black especially in winter. In summer I am very much a “dress” girl. I’ll usually wear a long linen number with Birkenstocks or sneakers.
I would love to see fashion slow down a little bit, the seasons move so quickly and there is a lot of pressure on labels for “newness”. It’s expensive for brands to constantly be sampling styles and creating new designs, it can also be wasteful and encourages society to focus on “new” styles rather then “classic” styles. I have been selling some of my styles for three years and people still purchase them every season, this is such a great sign to me of a style that is classic and has longevity. I think it would be great to see this celebrated a bit more and encouraged.
I would love to get more into some organic fabric, mainly organic cotton. I do always try and source fibres that are sustainable or have sustainable properties however it can be difficult to find them – especially in Aus. where we are a bit limited for choice. I am hoping that as the demand increases we may see more fabric suppliers and mills producing these fabrics.
Aside from this I will continue to focus on small runs, classic pieces and hope to continue to grow the label nationally and internationally as people start to value local production more.
